These cars are legend. There are divisions amongst owners and outsiders alike for Best Year or V8>anything.
I have the redesigned S197 V6 with MT82 transmission. I ordered this car as they are not common, there were only three for sale in South New Jersey when I was looking. “It’s only a V6” hasn’t driven this car. 305HP stock. I’ve updated much of the driveline and suspension, this car is fun. This car is reliable with almost 200,000miles on it. Never had a major repair outside of maintenance. I can get up to 31MPG on highway. The rear live axle was the last mustang to have it. There are few other truly American sports cars out there at an affordable price point.
This is a Ford. There are hard plastics that rattle. It’s not very quiet, but who wants that? Aftermarket is large.
It comes with an LSD that likely needs a rebuild at this point in the aftermarket, mines updated to a mechanical Torsen differential. Snow is not an issue for the initiated. Careful driving and dedicated snow tires have taken me past Jeeps and Trucks in many storms.
The MT82 gets a bad wrap. German design, Chinese made, in American car. The ford racing short throw shifter fixes missed shifts. A stage 1 clutch with solid flywheel fixes the harmonic vibration of the stock dual-mass flywheel. One piece aluminum drive shaft removes the top end limiter and improves acceleration. Stock this car is good. With a few add-ons it is fun.
It really is a two seater for the size. Rear seat is good for gear or children or punishment of friends.
